چکیده

An investigation is conducted to assess the thermal performance of multi-layered screen laminates when used as extended surface matrices (ESM’s) in vertical up-flow boiling. A dielectric coolant (FC-72) is used as the working fluid. Four specimens are constructed having different mesh-geometries and/or number of layers. Channel Reynolds numbers are varied from 2700 to 8500 and ESM base superheats are varied from 0 °C to 50 °C. Results indicate that devices equipped with this technology can tolerate steady heat fluxes up to 140 W/cm2 (based on the base area of the ESM) with corresponding ESM base superheats below 50°C. Reynolds number has a small effect on performance at low surface temperatures and a moderate effect at higher surface temperatures. Total capacity of the ESM (the product of heat flux and base area) increases approximately linearly with the thickness. A feature of this technology is that it greatly extends the working range over a bare surface.

CHF model for subcooled flow boiling in Earth gravity and microgravity

This study is the first attempt at extending the Interfacial Lift-off CHF Model to subcooled flow boiling conditions. A new CHF database was generated for FC-72 from ground tests as well as from microgravity tests that were performed in parabolic flight trajectory. These tests also included high-speed video imaging and analysis of the liquid–vapor interface during the CHF transient. Both the CH...

Nucleate boiling from smooth and rough surfaces - Part 2: Analysis of surface roughness effects on nucleate boiling

The effect of surface roughness on nucleate boiling heat transfer is not clearly understood. This study is devised to conduct detailed heat transfer and bubble measurements during boiling on a heater surface with controlled roughness. This second of two companion papers presents an analysis of heat transfer and bubble ebullition in nucleate boiling with new measures of surface roughness: area r...

A high power electronic chip was simulated experimentally to investigate upper cooling capabilities using a variety of pool boiling enhancement techniques. Parametric effects of system pressure, subcooling, surface augmentation, and choice of coolant on boiling heat transfer from a vertical 12.7'x 12.7 mm flat surface were examined. The two fluorocarbon coolants tested, FC-72 and FC-87, resulte...

Enhancement of Critical Heat Flux From High Power Microelectronic Heat Sources in a Flow Channel

Several surface augmentation techniques were examined in an investigation of enhancement of critical heat flux (CHF) from a simulated electronic chip to a fluorocarbon (FC-72) liquid in a vertical channel. A parametric comparison of boiling performances is presented for a smooth surface and for surfaces with low-profile microgrooves, low-profile microstuds, and high-profile pin fins. Critical h...
